It was a hot, sunny day as she carefully skirted the swimming pool, garden hose in hand. She was attempting to sneak up on the unsuspecting children and their mother to begin a water fight of major proportion. And then something happened — she fell in to her chagrin. All at once she found herself underwater, (thank God the shallow end) clothes and all still clutching the hose within her grasp. The only thing she knew was the pressure of the water surrounding her and the concerns of the mother rushing to the place of her "graceful" entry into the water. "Michelene, are you okay?" were the words I discerned in my moment of utter shock. You see, I am not a swimmer, nor am I comfortable around large (or small) bodies of water…guess I must have drowned in a past life. According to on-lookers my expression said it all and I equate it to the person who slips on a banana peel and goes flying. After I calmly yet quickly got to my feet and all was well, the girls and I, as well as their mother proceeded to have that water fight of major proportions. It was a fun time, a day of surprises and much laugher. I suppose the reason I am telling this story is life is changing for me at a very rapid pace. I am learning the meaning of fun and that life has so much to share and teach us. Some of my greatest teachers lately have been, Ariana, and Diandra — the children with whom our water fight ended in a tie. I am amazed at what comes out of their mouths and even in their innocence they are far from "little girls growing up." Their wisdom and insights, the very delivery of which is awesome, blows me away. Through observation of these eight and ten year old young girls I can see our world as a brighter place. I am discovering so much. Besides patience I am learning to open my heart to the love they so willingly share. The moments when they come and include me in their activities — something new for me. In fact, it is something I am not use to…this being surrounded by people who welcome me into their home — not as a guest, but as a member of their family. The message I wish to impart this month is simple. Love with no strings attached, open your heart to the innocence of life and remember, allow yourself to be receptive to change.
