Color And Its Affects

Colors are one element within our environment that most people aren’t consciously aware of their affect. You go into your closet and pull out that navy blue business suit for a job interview. Why navy blue? One reason is because the color blue is a color that assists people with communication. It also gives people a feeling of calmness and peacefulness. It allows one to be perceived as open.

All the colors in your environment affect your emotional and mental state. Let’s take an example. What is the color of your living room? How do you feel when you are in the room? Now visualize the room a bright lime green. How do you now feel? I’m sure you’re feeling a bit stimulated, vibrant and energetic. This color would be a great color for a child’s playroom not so much for a living room or bedroom.

Marketing, interior design, product development, and many more professions have to know the affect color has on people in order to get you to take action and purchase their product. For instance, McDonald’s colors, red and yellow, are colors that make people hungry but also trigger people to eat fast and then be on their way. These two colors are ones you would not want to decorate your kitchen with. If you did you’d probably discover yourself nibbling more than usual.

Colors throughout my entire life have affected me on a daily basis. In fact, I drove and still drive my mother nuts because every year I have a new color. If my Mom bought me a new shirt it would have to be the color that I was attracted to that year. If it wasn’t I would return the shirt for the exact color I was drawn too. How many of you walk into a store and have to have that shirt in the color of your choice and if it’s not in that color you don’t buy anything. 

I’ll never forget my senior year in high school I loved the color yellow. Everything I wore was yellow. And, on top of that I redecorated my bedroom with yellow paint, yellow curtains, yellow carpet, yellow sheets and yellow comforter. As a senior, I instinctively knew and felt the affect of color in my life. The color yellow symbolizes learning, intellect, studying, and inventions. It’s a very mental controlling color. As a senior in high school preparing to go off to college it’s no wonder why I was drawn to that color.

It’s important for people to realize that everything and everyone has an impact in your life. The news, the phone call, the child that smiles at you in a store, the woman yelling at her boyfriend, the colors you paint your living room, and the music you listen too all impact your moods and mental state which then eventually will affect your physical well-being. To assist you with understanding why you are drawn to a certain color, below is a brief description:

Red – anger, security, stability, building a foundation for yourself, finances

Orange – passion, sexuality, ambitions, social, friendly

Yellow – intellect, mental, studious, controlling, fear

Green – healing, nature, love, envious, search for harmony and balance

Blue – emotions, communication, speaking, writing, integrity, honor and sincerity

Purple – spirituality, wisdom, preachers, visionary

Black – mysterious, hiding oneself from the outside world, secretive

White – truth, purity, balance, honesty, cleansing

Brown – earthy, grounded, having common sense

All of us can use color to assist us with healing and creating a more powerful environment! Next time you reach for the blue shirt in your closet think about why you are drawn to that specific color that day in time.
